Maiden Youth Flag Football Development Camp

Dr. Ray shares words of encouragement to an aspiring student athlete.

In a groundbreaking step for American football in Kenya, the Kenya Federation of American Football (KFAF) hosted its first-ever Youth Flag Football Development Camp at the University of Nairobi, bringing together over 100 learners from five Nairobi-based schools for a day of skill-building, leadership training, and competition.

This historic camp, led by Dr. Harrison Baxter, Head of the USA–Kenya American Football Project, marks the first official youth-focused activation of the sport in Kenya. It was executed in partnership with iChange Nations, a global leadership and civility organization committed to empowering youth through structured programs and mentorship.

“This was a resounding success,” said Dr. Baxter. “What we witnessed today was more than a football clinic—it was the planting of a seed that will grow into future opportunities for Kenyan youth on and off the field.”

Participating Schools Included:

  • Green Edgewood Academy
  • Creative Integrated Academy
  • White cottage School
  • Early Learners School
  • Ruaraka Academy
  • Kinyanjui Primary.

The camp introduced pupils to the core elements of flag football, including passing, route running, flag-pulling, teamwork, and leadership development. Sessions were facilitated in a safe and engaging environment, encouraging both learning and fun.

Diplomatic & Government Support

In a show of growing international and local support, the event was graced by representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, who praised the initiative for its role in sports diplomacy and youth development.

Also invited were officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, and the Ministry of Education—a reflection of the project's broader national importance.

“We’re proud to see American football growing roots in Kenya, and we’re thankful for the U.S. Embassy’s presence at this maiden camp,” said George Alwang’a, KFAF President. “This is just the beginning. With continued support, we will expand across the country and bring even more young people into the game.”

Looking Ahead

This inaugural camp is part of a long-term development plan aimed at preparing Kenya to host a major international American football event, featuring both senior and youth teams. It will also include referee training, equipment donations, and cultural exchange activities—all contributing to Kenya’s positioning as a hub for sports tourism.

“We are building a legacy—one rooted in sport, leadership, and opportunity,” added Dr. Baxter. “Kenya has the talent. All it needs now is the platform.”
